Network Engineer

About the Opportunity
The Network Engineer will be responsible for configuring and maintaining network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls and other devices; designing and deploying functional networks such as LAN or WAN; monitoring network performance, security, and integrity; suggesting improvements to network capacity, performance, and scalability; maintaining technical documentation and mentoring team on technical issues; creating, overseeing and testing security measures such as disaster recovery and access authentication; identifying and resolving issues by troubleshooting local and cloud infrastructure; communicating with the network users as needed; configuring NAT, Policy-based routing, and other policies as needed; configuring VPN endpoints and policies for System Office and customers; support off-hours rotation to support environment (planned maintenance, escalation, etc.); and working with ISP and other providers for connectivity requirements as needed.
This position may be eligible for a hybrid or remote work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.

About the Team
The Information Technology division works collaboratively with UNC constituent institutions to help ensure efficient and cost-effective integration of new technologies that meet common and unique needs of the 17 institutions. The division is also charged with managing the highly complex enterprise-wide data modernization efforts that will enable the System to better monitor, evaluate, and manage our enterprise; as well as facilitate timely comparisons across the 17 institutions and create better data-sharing capabilities for smarter and more efficient data-driven decisions.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Master's degree and 2-4 years experience; or bachelor's and 3-5 years experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Required Competencies

  • Experience as a Network Administrator or Network Engineer, preferably in a senior position
  • Experience with network administration and architecture
  • Knowledge of communication protocols specifically routing protocols like BGP, OSPF as well as TCP/IP
  • Sound knowledge about network security and control models
  • Experience with network monitoring, diagnostics, and analysis tools
  • Experience with network operating systems such as PanOS and Cisco IOS
  • Experience with network virtualization, such as GENEVE and VXLAN
  • Exceptional organizational, leadership and management skills
  • An analytical mind with a problem-solving attitude
  • Ability to make quick decisions while working independently

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Professionally certified in Palo Alto (PCNSA, PCNSE, etc.), Cisco (CCNP, CCDP, etc.) or other relevant certifications
  • Experience with VMware NSX (NSX-V, NSX-T, etc.)
