Business Development Manager
UI Pharmaceuticals has an opening for a Business Development/Project Manager to support its enterprise-wide strategic initiatives. UI Pharmaceuticals is a fee for service entity on the University of Iowa Campus that provides contract drug manufacturing (CDMO) services to academic, biotech, and pharmaceuticals clients. These services range from early-stage formulation development, analytical method support, clinical trial material manufacturing, to commercial product manufacture and support. Between our non-sterile and sterile manufacturing, annually, we manufacture approximately 150 individual lots of material. In addition to manufacturing projects, there are between 80-100 active projects in some project stage.
The responsibility for this position will be to employ basic project management skills to ensure that UI Pharmaceuticals’ project goals and objectives are met within the established requirements. Duties include, but are not limited to, providing business development support through the drafting of quotations, project oversight, customer management, and external marketing efforts. The ideal candidate will be responsible for working with prospective clients to guide them through the project intake process, write quotations, and be responsible for the coordinating the planning,directing and manufacture of clinical, and commercial pharmaceutical and biotechnology products.
The Project Manager will collaborate with other UI Pharmaceutical departments to develop, design, and deploy marketing materials that help highlight our capabilities to drive business into UI Pharmaceuticals. Specific duties include handling incoming client requests for information, defining project scopes, executing CDA/NDAs, collecting information required to provide proposals for service, preparing proposals for service, communicating with clients on active projects to facilitate timely project completion, and coordinating provision of deliverables. This position will also play a key role in internal initiatives such as improving business conversion rates, streamlining processes, optimizing throughput, and increasing market awareness.
The Project Manager will analyze project requirements, develop implementation strategies and provide guidance and oversight throughout the initiative/project management life cycle, assisting the Director of Business Development by serving as a change agent for the organization and working effectively in a diverse environment in conjunction with the project leaders and executive sponsors.
UIP has advertised a Senior Business Development Manager (requisition #22002872), along with this position. You may apply for one or both positions, however, we are seeking to fill only one opening at either the associate or manager level.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Compliance
- Interpret federal level global policies, regulations, and guidelines regarding drug product development (including both GMP and DEA regulations) to ensure compliance with federal regulations regarding drug development, manufacturing, and testing.
Project Management
- Manage multiple projects at various stages of completion and the drug development process.
- Initiate, plan, execute, monitor & control, and close out projects, providing project management support and services throughout.
- Adhere to internal and external project management philosophy, principles and practices.
- Host client technical visits serving as the technical face of UIP for external organizations.
Initiation and Planning
- Collaborate and coordinate with project sponsor to develop project outline and timing for requested studies.
- Develop and maintain projected project schedule, project requirements, deliverables, etc.
- Assemble project team, assign individual responsibilities, identify resources, and develop schedules to ensure timely completion of project.
- Working with each client estimate costs, develop project budget, identify resources, document issues and outline in a formal quote to be delivered to customer for consideration.
Leadership/Supervision
- May oversee coaching and mentoring of project team members in the use of project management tools and processes.
- May develop training standards for project managers.
- Exhibit leadership and general management skills in day-to-day activities.
- Use good communications and negotiation skills to achieve desired outcomes.
Executing, Monitoring & Controlling and Close Out
- Execute project management plan to fulfill project requirements.
- With client guidance and feedback, aid in the implementation of approved actions and adjustments to manage project risks.
- Validate and Control Scope, monitor project cost, schedule, and technical performance of projects and operations. Generate new quotes for service when original scop has been exceeded and work with client to rescope and approve.
- Facilitate project meetings.
External Marketing and Business Development Efforts
- Assist in the development of UI Pharmaceuticals specific marketing materials including but not limited to brochures, external presentations, white papers, or related media content.
- Attend trade shows to present UI Pharmaceuticals services.
- May develop market research, identify sample frame and survey design under direction.
- May contribute to brand consistency in all projects. Monitor and report on marketing trends in assigned areas. May contribute to messaging and positioning strategies for the brand.

Education Requirement
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as Business, Business Administration, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related science (e.g., chemistry or engineering); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Required
- Experience within a regulated environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with a strong focus on customer service utilizing established PMO Program/Project Management methodology, processes, procedures, tools, and techniques to improve quality measures and metrics.
- Evidence of individually and collaboratively achieving results, providing service excellence, and demonstrating successful project management and implementation in a diverse work environment.
- Proven ability to process information with high levels of accuracy and attention to detail, including grammar and punctuation.
- Strong communication (written and verbal) and organizational skills as demonstrated through the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with all levels of management and project team members.
- Proficient in Project Management tools such as MS Project, MS Word, MS Excel, MS SharePoint, MS Visio, and MS PowerPoint.
Desirable Qualifications
- A Master's degree in Business Administration, Business or Management, Pharmaceutics, or a related discipline.
- 2-3 years of demonstrated project management experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing or analytical testing.
- Experience within Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or current Good Manufacturing (cGMP) regulated environment.
- Direct or related project management job experience in:
- Pharmaceutical formulation development.
- Pharmaceutical quality (either assurance or control).
- Government regulations in relation to pharmaceuticals.
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- Experience preparing quotations in a contract manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to engage as individual contributor in successful project management and implementation.
- PMI Project Management Professional (PMP), Master Certificate in Project Management, Public Heath Certification or Informatics Certificate, Prince2, AIPM Certified Practicing Project Manager (CPPM), ITILv3, Lean, Agile and/or Six Sigma certification.
