Reporter-Johnson County Issues
The Kansas City Star is looking for an energetic, experienced reporter to cover Johnson County, a fast-moving beat in Kansas City’s booming suburbs. The job demands competitive breaking news coverage, as well as exclusive, in-depth enterprise reporting.This is a watchdog role, focused on holding city and county officials accountable, extending beyond what’s happening at City Hall to help readers understand the impact of government action and inaction. The reporter should be motivated to tell the stories of Johnson County residents, including those who are often overlooked, to shine a light on inequities and injustices. The beat includes government watchdog, local politics, development and equity stories.
Qualifications:

Bachelor's in Journalism and one to two years of experience preferred

Strong writing and reporting skills and excellent news judgment

The ability to shoot passable photos and videos

Solid news judgment and excellent journalism ethics

Understanding of open records laws and the ability to file, manage and oversee requests pertinent to beat work

Ability to engage with readers and develop sources on social media platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

Understanding of SEO and other optimization opportunities and a demonstrated ability to learn new skills in social and digital

Ability to correctly identify audiences for selected stories
