Maker Space Technician

Job Summary
The Maker Space Technician assists the College of Engineering with maintaining the equipment, and supplies, and software in the Engineering labs. Several of the chief tasks include overseeing the Maker Space, maintaining equipment, obtaining price quotes, designing and creating circuit boards, assisting with project designs, assisting with lab renovations, and supervising student workers.

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and repair lab equipment, supplies and computers. Plan and schedule regular maintenance of lab equipment to ensure that they are in good operational condition.
  • Obtain price quotes from vendors for needed equipment, parts, and supplies.
  • Design and make printed circuit boards. Assist colleagues and students in projects designs.
  • Assist in designing and implementing lab renovations and choosing new equipment.
  • Gather factual information from within the college, from other colleges, and from outside agencies.
  • Oversee the Maker Space. Train students in the safe operation of the space equipment, maintain records or electronic system to ensure that only trained students are operating the controlled equipment
  • Train students in electronics-related skills, and in the proper use of Maker Space equipment.
  • Supervise student and temporary workers.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment inventory, including (but not limited to) primary equipment and replacement parts for electronic equipment.
  • Maintain warranty information, service and repair records.
  • Work with IT staff and faculty to maintain software for specialized equipment in Engineering labs.
  • Guide students in selecting and/or distributing electronic components for use in laboratory experiments, engineering activities, and design projects.
  • Perform quality checks on newly delivered equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • *Establish procedures for students checking out and returning measuring devices and materials, and monitor compliance with the procedure.
  • Assist students in printing their project posters or similar projects.
  • Drive and/or supervise students in travel to design competitions.

Required Skills:
Ability to work well with students, staff, and faculty. Ability to gather and interpret data using technical guidelines. Knowledge of standard office policies and procedures. Ability to learn and work with various software applications and hardware. Ability to complete all principal responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Associate’s Degree or two-year college equivalent in Electronics Technology or a related field. One or more years of work experience.
