Located approximately 45 minutes from Duluth, Minnesota, Minnesota Correctional Facility-Moose Lake is a medium security facility that serves up to 1,000 incarcerated men. MCF-Moose Lake is a pathway for qualified individuals to participate in the boot camp program at nearby MCF-Willow River. The MCF-Moose Lake library is a special library, unique within the field and serving a particular community. The library exists to support the DOC mission, promote personal growth, and add value to the community. The library contains approximately 15,000 items for circulation, in addition to a permanent law library collection.
Under limited supervision, the Librarian manages the daily operations of one of the DOC’s busiest libraries, performing duties ranging from collection development, budgeting and procurement, reference and reader’s advisory, cataloguing and interlibrary loan, programming, and training and directing the work of incarcerated circulation clerks. In this job, you get to do all the things that make a library the heart of any community. There’s always something happening in the library, and the librarian is at the center. The work is challenging, wide-ranging, and incredibly meaningful. Though you’ll be the only librarian at Moose Lake, you will have colleagues throughout the department to guide and support you, as well as access to professional development opportunities.
Examples of duties:
- Manages automated circulation system, registering new patrons, entering bibliographic information, preparing and customizing reports, database clean-up, and inventory
- Organizes, implements, and maintains all phases of interlibrary loan process
- Hires, trains, supervises, coaches, and organizes the daily work of incarcerated library clerks
- Establishes guidelines for appropriate behavior of incarcerated library customers
- Enforces facility and library rules
- Orders and maintains library and office supplies
- Compiles periodic statistical and narrative reports
- Plans, monitors, and evaluates service delivery
- Selects and purchases formats of library materials to meet the full range of library/information needs of the customers of the library
- Confers with facility staff regarding their clients' information needs and keeps them informed when the library is able to meet those needs
- Uses online tools to create orders
- Assesses, evaluates, and maintains collections through periodic weeding and inventory
- Acts as a resource for troubleshooting and/or problem solving for ongoing or special projects amongst facility libraries
- Provides technical support or subject expertise to accomplish program goals
- Works with colleagues on projects for other facility libraries, such as planning, implementing, and evaluating major changes
- Selects material to fill information requests and assists incarcerated individuals with bibliographic tools

This position is located in a correctional facility and will have direct contact with students who are incarcerated.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position:
- Master's degree in Library Science, Library Media or Information Media or a *related field;
OR - Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Library Media or Information Media or a *related field AND a minimum of 6 months professional-level experience as a librarian with job responsibilities in the following areas: 1) perform, plan and/or administer library/information services; 2) use cataloging and circulation software; 3) direct or provide reference services; 4) develop library policy; 5) library acquisitions and collection development; 6) circulation; and 7) budgeting;
OR - Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Library Media or Information Media or a *related field AND a minimum of 2 years para-professional or technical library experience with job responsibilities in the following areas: 1) maintain library records and resources; 2) use cataloging and circulation software; 3) assist library users with research and library procedures; 4) recommend, research and record library acquisitions; 5) process inter-library loan requests; and 6) complete documents, forms, and reports to assist Librarians. (Note: General clerical work in a library, such as typing or filing, does not qualify as para-professional or technical library work.)

Additional qualifications:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of library/information sciences and library operations sufficient to develop and administer a system of diverse/specialized technical library information services.
- Human relations and interpersonal skills sufficient to provide effective library services to a diverse offender population.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:
- Master’s degree in Library Science, Library Media or Information Media or a *related field.
- Professional-level experience as a librarian.
- Experience working in a law library.

The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy.
