Gaston College is seeking to fill the following position: The Assistant Coach – Women's Softball/Field Maintenance & Equipment Coordinator
The Assistant Coach – Women's Softball/Field Maintenance & Equipment Coordinator is a part-time coaching position reporting to the Head Coach – Women's Softball with a stipend of up to $15,000 per year.

Assist the Head Coach – Women’s Softball (Fast Pitch) with various activities associated with the operations of the Softball (Fast Pitch) program including practice planning, game preparation, game execution, coaching and teaching the knowledge, skills, techniques, and strategies to optimize player abilities and development and team competitiveness, recruitment, conditioning programs, monitoring academic performance and student life and development, fundraising activities. Assist in coordinating summer and other camps. Ensure compliance with institutional, regional, and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) rules and regulations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Head Coach – Women’s Softball (Fast Pitch) with various activities associated with the operations of the Softball (Fast Pitch) program including practice planning, game preparation, game execution, coaching and teaching the knowledge, skills, techniques, and strategies to optimize player abilities and development and team competitiveness.
- Coach first or third base and assume head coaching duties as needed.
- Optimize player abilities and development by coaching offensive and/or defensive fundamentals of the game including skills, techniques, and strategies to optimize individual and team knowledge, skills, confidence, and competitiveness.
- Assists in preparing, planning, conducting, and evaluating practices.
- Coach various offensive and/or defensive fundamentals and skills to optimize player abilities and team competitiveness including, but not limited to:
- Hitting - including hitting drills, batting mechanics, plate discipline and preparation, and preparation for opposing pitchers (strategy).
- Baserunning - including techniques for various situations.
- Pitching - including grip, mechanics, arm movement, footwork, follow-through, and strategy.
- Catching - including stance, footwork, receiving pitches (target and grip/technique), throwing, blocking, framing, preparation for opposing hitters.
- Infield play - including position specific and team defense and situational drills such as the ability to field and throw accurately to reduce or eliminate errors.
- Outfield play- including position specific and team defense and situational drills such as the ability to field and throw accurately to reduce or eliminate errors.
- Assist with the coordination, evaluation, and recruitment of student athletes including coordinating the administration of recruitment materials and information. Maintains contact with prospective student-athletes and coordinates campus visits for student athletes and their parents.
- Responsible for practice and game-related logistics including, but not limited to, field preparation, equipment maintenance, and other tasks to facilitate smooth practices, travels, and games.
- Coordinate the maintenance and distribution of equipment and equipment inventory. May assist with monitoring expenditures which may include ordering equipment, uniforms and supplies, travel, and facility needs.
- Assess athlete’s skills, monitor during competition and practice, organize and direct individual and small group practice activities/exercise based on performance.
- Monitor academic progress of all student athletes including the progress and eligibility of transfer students. Maintain database to track student athlete’s academic progress.
- Adhere to all rules, regulations, and policies of the College, Athletic Department, NJCAA, and federal Title IX requirements.
- Assist with searching, selecting, and training volunteer coaches following College polices.
- Ensure the safety of student athletes and coaching staff through careful monitoring of the conditions of equipment and facilities. Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
- Establish and ensure communication and enforcement of rules and regulations regarding Title IX, student conduct, behavior, class attendance, and College policies and procedures.
- Assist the Head Coach with approved fundraising activities as required.
- Model and foster sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct toward players, officials, and spectators. Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities. Report any rule or policy violations to the appropriate college authorities.
- Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional development activities to improve coaching performance.
- Maintain a high standard of professional and ethical practice in representing the College. Maintain confidentiality of relevant information. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the field or discipline with continued adherence to professional accountability. Establish and maintain effective working relationships and partnerships. Accept responsibility for managing situations and problems. Work cooperatively with team members and colleagues and contribute positively and constructively to the achievement of team and College objectives. Adhere to the College’s policies, procedures and other established guidelines. Keep supervisor informed of concerns relating to position. Serve on various College committees as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree from a nationally accredited institution required.
- Master’s degree from a nationally accredited institution preferred.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- Softball (Fast Pitch) coaching experience required at the collegiate or professional level or three years of coaching experience at the high school level.
- Outfield coaching experience preferred.
- Field/equipment maintenance experience preferred.
- Strong interpersonal communication, planning, and organization skills required.
- Experience working in public relations and with the media preferred.
- Experience in collegiate athletic programs or recreation preferred.
- Knowledge of NJCAA and Title IX regulations and reporting preferred.
- Current CPR / AED certification or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
- Valid driver's license and the ability to travel throughout the country.
