The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) at Florida International University (FIU) invites applications for the position of Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (Sr. ADAA). The Sr. ADAA has governance authority for all academic programs including the M.D., Masters in P.A. studies, Ph.D., International Student Program, and the postbaccalaureate Graduate Certificate Program (“the HWCOM Programs”). The Sr. ADAA will coordinate and provide the necessary resources for the continued success of these programs through each Program’s Directors and Associate Deans, fostering a climate of academic excellence, collaboration, team-based approach, and interdisciplinary initiatives to supporting students, and promoting effective and productive working relationships among faculty, staff, and students.

 

We seek a dynamic and visionary leader that will lead, assess, and implement an innovative and coherent strategic plan for the Academic and Student Affairs programs of the HWCOM. The Sr. ADAA will participate in accreditation processes for FIU by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), for HWCOM’s medical education program by the Liaison Committee for Medical Educations (LCME), and for the Master in Physician Assistant Studies Program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

 

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing leadership for the development and implementation of new programs, technology and/or services, and collaborate with academic administrators, the faculty, and the Academic and Student Affairs staff to ensure quality, continuity, innovation, and integrity in academic and student matters. The Sr. ADAA will oversee quality of instruction and course content of all academic programs in the classroom and online; establish priorities for academic program development and for recruiting the key academic leaders necessary to successfully execute the educational goals of the strategic plan; and ensure the efficient assignment of faculty effort to cover the teaching needs of all educational programs across HWCOM. The leader assigned to this role will collaborate within the university with the Provost's Office, Student Affairs, as well as with HWCOM Office of Institutional Knowledge Management in the process of continuous programmatic improvement, accreditation, and strategic planning. Finally, the Sr. ADAA will strengthen existing relationships with universities, affiliate institutions, community physicians, and other organizations to help advance the educational mission and ensure the success of the College of Medicine.

 

Minimum qualifications include an MD or PhD degree and at least five years of experience as a faculty member at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. A minimum of five years of experience in academic/educational leadership or equivalent experience.

 

Preferred qualifications include expertise in managing an academic program in health sciences; demonstrated ability to design, develop and implement academic program initiatives; experience in managing accreditation process; strong record of teaching, service, and scholarship; innovation towards new pedagogy; excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated adaptability and flexibility; strong interpersonal skills with peers, students, and administration; supervision of other faculty and/or staff; demonstrated experience in being able to work collaboratively with other Departments, administrators, and university stakeholders; and evidence of a commitment to mentoring and developing students, faculty, and staff.
