Position Summary
Oversee all aspects of camp food service for youth and adult groups during summer camp and school-year retreat seasons. Prepare menus, order food, prepare food, train and supervise kitchen staff, maintain inventory, assure health and safety standards, and provide excellent customer service to groups. During the summer season, this position oversees a team of kitchen staff to prepare and serve meals and pack-out food; during the spring/fall/winter seasons, acts as head cook for school and retreat groups.
Organization Overview
Camp Sealth is a summer camp, outdoor education center, and retreat facility located on Vashon Island, Washington, which serves around 7,000 people year-round. Summer camp is comprised of eight weeks of overnight camp and six weeks of day camp, serving over 2,000 youth each summer. During the school year, Camp Sealth hosts outdoor education and retreats for school and non-profit groups between September and May; groups and schools may range in size from 10 to 300.
Camp Sealth’s parent organization, Camp Fire Central Puget Sound, also runs programs for teen leadership and service, traditional youth club programs, and community day camps throughout the Puget Sound area. Qualifications
- At least 2 years work experience in institutional kitchens
- Supervisory, team management, and conflict resolution skills
- Knowledge of or ability to learn: placing food orders, maintaining inventory, budgeting
- Experience in a variety of food preparation including family-style and buffet serving, managing special diets and allergen-free food, and high-volume preparation
- Ability to work a flexible schedule
- Good organization and planning skills
- Excellent customer service and accommodating for campers, staff, and guests
- Responsibility, flexibility, and accountability
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and work independently in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance
- Competency with basic computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Serve Safe certification, or ability to obtain certification
- Washington State Food Worker’s Card
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record
